Viva Viernes! (dos)

(See #4 of the previous post if none of this makes sense.)

Vacation it is!

Actually, word came down that they had to eliminate one of the two positions, and I was the keeper. BUT, dumbass that I am, I decided to tell my boss that that was the wrong decision. My coworker has three kids and truly likes this job and enjoys working here and will probably stay as long as possible, whereas I don't like this job and am planning to leave it as soon as I can. And they wanted to keep me.

Don't go writing songs about me just yet, because the joke may be on the coworker. On Monday she'll be inheriting all of my work on top of hers. The more I think about, avoiding that fate is reason enough for me to get the hell out.

She sure thinks I'm a hero, though. She'd already been given the bad news when I had to go throw a wrench in the works (sorry for the cliche, Chris) by taking the bullet instead (and again here, Chris). I assured her of my (mostly) selfish motivations, but she is grateful nonetheless.

Unfortunately, I'll be leaving behind the job that drove me to blogging in the first place, with its copious downtime and nobody looking over my shoulder. And no dealing with the public. Shit, I didn't even have to deal with coworkers much. There's a lot to be said for that. Just me and a stack of papers and a computer monitor to distract me from my toil.

But I'm not a stack of papers kind of guy, so it's time to move on. Now that Courtney and I are both unemployed at the same time (a first), what should we do with our limitless freedom but limited funds? Tell me, oh internets, WHAT NOW?!!

(Seriously, I appreciate the supportive comments from earlier today, but this really is not a sad occasion. I welcome it or else I wouldn't have done it. I left without exactly being laid off or fired, and that's how I wanted to go. So YAY ME!)

Mickey, you can hold your head up high knowing that you took one for the team in the layoff department.

Seriously, you guys need to keep all that layoff mojo in Knoxrageous and away from me. Those of us who have fertilized our wives' uteri need the income to keep coming in.

May you find another job quickly that is more challenging (in a non-busy work kinda way).

Layoffs are the best!!! i love unemployment, whoohoo!!!!

Oh man. That sucks.

Mickey, now I can't make fun of you settling into a crappy business job for life. I hate you.

My only question is whether this goes down as a resignation or a layoff. If you resigned, then you can't pull the goverment-cheese heaven of unemployment that Courtney does.

Um, congratulations?

This is what you should do/say:

"Let's go to Canada, let's leave today.

Canada, Oh Canada.

I s'il vous plait!"

Or go climbing in Utah.

man, that was a cool thing you did. most people wouldn't have the clarity you had in that strange situation, and actually speak up and do the right thing.

I do think that was an admirable thing you did.

You guys could start a traveling folk band!?!? I will be your manager. Your first gig is tomorrow, in Mayors Income, Tennessee. I'll see you at 4am. That's when we rehearse. I have already seen, via the internets, Courtney's jig skills, so tell her to brush those up. You need to come up with a comparable skill. I am thinking maybe simultaneous butter churning and whistling. But that's just a preliminary thought.

Mickey could synchronize his table climbing to the music. That would be comparable.

You know what? Congratulations on being unemployed. Enjoy it. And bravo on the admirable thing you did. Does karma exist? Dunno. But you've got your bases covered.

Having recently enjoyed a streak of dual unemployment with my other, I say you and Courtney make the best of it. Have a blast!

There was a time when both Birmingham & I were unemployed, and it was a golden month in our relationship. Then he got a job an hour away, and we never saw each other, and it sucked, but we could afford to do things that we never had time to do. So live it up, because if another job comes along, it's going to eat up that precious time.

Oh yeah, definitely enjoy it while it lasts. Although, I hate to be a downer here, but in MA you are not eligible for unemployment if you leave your work voluntarily. Are you still going to be able to collect?

One thing I do not recommend for you both to do: get food poisoning at the same time. Chris and I tried that the other night and it was easily the least fun we've had in years.

One word: prostitution. Think about it.

Come to Moscow!! Both of you! Seriously. Ok, it'll cost you a bit to get here, but I'll take care of everything while you're here! Delta flies here direct from Atlanta. I have a huge apartment. I can help you get the visas necessary. Really, I mean it! (Does anybody want a peanut?)

OK, I'm trying to decide if I should second the traveling folk duo plan or the prostitution plan. Kidding. No contest. Traveling folk duo. If you guys make it to Minneapolis, be sure to let me know.

Time for you guys to move back to Georgia? Nah, I imagine you'll find a much cooler place, that you haven't already been, to move to! Good luck! And I hope you can at least collect unemployment.

Wow. You really are incredible. You're trying to make it seem like it was no big deal, but that was a seriously amazing thing to do.

My husband and I had a little bit of time between jobs once. We slept until super late in the afternoon, watched the travel channel obsessively (back when I thought cable was a necessity) and went hiking every day. It was awesome.

I hope you guys have fun!

time to catch up on all those A-Team reruns!

That's the problem isn't it? Freedom but limited funds. Found myself in that position once (when I left university) not willing to go back there, ever. I watched so many Dr Phil episodes in those few months. I can't go back to that.

this sounds exactly like a movie...you're a hero! what exactly did you do at this place of employment??
