But I like The Mars Volta! (For the first twelve minutes of a song, at least.)

Okay, so I took a week off. Kill me already. (As if you, or I, care that much.)

I'm going to ease back in with a link, since it's Friday and nobody ever reads my blog on Fridays anyway. It's the funniest thing I've ever read on msnbc.com, which isn't saying much, since the biggest laughs they usually give me are over the utter uselessness of some of their stories, but the level of biting snark in this piece makes it worth sharing.

Seriously, click the link. It's just a short slide show titled "Gadgets that make you look like a jerk." It'll take two minutes to read. Of course the Bluetooth has always looked ridiculous and if wearing your cell phone or anything else on your belt was ever cool (I'm guessing not), it definitely hasn't been since the beeper days of the early '90s, when it just meant you were a drug dealer or a doctor (which in turn meant you either had a gun or lots of money elsewhere on your person, both of which would put you beyond reproach.)

Aside from a comment about the too-cool-for-it's-own-good band mentioned in my title above, I'm thankfully not victimized by any of this. I've never even taken my iPod out in public. Shit, I didn't even pay for the thing. I don't really do gadgets until they're not considered gadgets anymore. I've only had the hand-me-down iPod for a few months and I first got a cell phone in 2004. In other words, I swing the other way by being an out-of-touch jerk rather than a cutting-edge jerk. (How many more hyphenates can I squeeze into this paragraph?) I do listen to some pretty pretentious music from time to time, though.

While I was reading that list, I had one iPod earbud hanging out of my ear. I'm so uncool! (But I want to listen to music and also be able to hear someone if they come up behind me! What's a girl to do?)

The Segway is possibly the dorkiest thing this side of D&D, but I'm not saying I wouldn't use one if I had the opportunity.

Dude, the Segway was invented in NH. Don't front.

I love the Mars Volta as well, it makes me feel like I've dropped acid without ever having to have dropped acid before.

I love my ipods (both of them) but have only one accessory. It is the FM transmitter that allows me to play my music over the car speakers. It is for use in a confined space, so i think it's ok.

Also, I love my Tivos. Both of them. I do occasionally sing the praises of the devices in public or to friends but they are all well-deserved.

I have an iRiver rather than an iPod, and I confess to taking that thing everywhere. I love it. However, both earbuds are always in my ears because, frankly, I don't want anyone to talk to me while I'm grocery shopping/trekking up the hill/on a walk. I see what Courtney's saying, though -- you don't want people to sneak up on you while you're rocking out.

There is just no excuse for Bluetooth headsets left in people's ears, though. You walk around with one of those -- instant douche.

I'm glad you acknowledge that there's another end to this spectrum :) ... I'm guilty of the Blackberry, and I know I have a problem and admitting it is the first step, right?

I wonder if having all seven makes you the more evil than the devil.

I refused to buy an iPod because they're overpriced for what they're capable of. I went with some 20 gb Creative mp3 player that had twice the storage for half the price. I use it all the time, but mostly in my car or on the lawnmower. The Prius has a nice port in the console that lets me connect it directly into the car speakers through a mini jack cord.

Bluetooth earpieces make you a total tool.

And I think you may have held out on the whole cell phone thing a year longer than me. I still barely use the thing. I thought my smart phone would change that, but it only gets taken out of the house when I'm going on long trips and know I won't have easy internet access.

And earbuds are the worst headphone design ever. They don't really fit (at least not in my ears) and when you get the wedged in enough to stay that make your ears hurt.

OK, that opening image was worth clicking over for. Who looks like that? Who gets that excited over a Bluetooth headset?

I don't think I get The Mars Volta. I've tried, but nope. I may be getting old.

I agree with most of that, but the MacBook Air is pretty great. J bikes to work when the weather isn't crap, and having a computer that's so small and light makes his life easier. The old one was pretty heavy in a messenger bag.

It's not so bad that you take a week off, but it always makes me sad when you and Courtney take the same week off.

And I know I have an ipod lying around here somewhere, but damn if I can remember the last time I used it...

Oh, and did I mention that I can now watch Netflix movies & tv shows instantaneously on my Tivo? Yup. I thought that was worth mentioning.

You're spot on. That may very well be the funniest thing MSNBC has ever done.

I've been sort of hoping the mainstream media would turn all anti-consumer and begin to sway the populace to something like sustainable living -- Obama campaign style. This is a start, I suppose. But Oprah and Ellen are still giving away these very items by the caseload to their studio audiences, so I guess we're still mostly screwed.

Is it bad that I've come to encourage blatant propaganda as a tool for social change?

My ipod definitely helps me hate the general public less. Thankfully, the blue tooth thing hasn't really caught on here... yet. Maybe the fur hats interfere?
